26 June 2008 - Commissioner publishes new guidance document on Social Networking Websites

Commissioner publishes new guidance document on Social Networking Websites

In the wake of the recently published Annual Report for 2007, the Commissioner has today published new guidance for users and providers of social networking websites. The guidance focuses on safety for the user and transparency for the provider, ensuring that individuals are kept well aware of what information will be accessed by whom, and that the site providers pay due regard to the privacy rights of those individuals.

Deputy Commissioner, Paul Vane said: "This is an important piece of guidance at a time when social networking via the internet is becoming a part of everyday lives, especially amongst young people. It is essential that users of these sites know how to be vigilant about their personal information, and do their utmost to safeguard their own privacy. Equally, providers of these sites have both a legal and moral obligation to protect those users as best as they can. Social networking websites should be both a fun and safe experience for those who wish to use them."

The guidance is available in the Guidance section of the Commissioner's website, or by clicking here.
