1 October 2007 The Commissioner reponds to RIPL consultation
The Data Protection Commissioner, Emma Martins, today published her response to the proposed amendment to the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Law (RIPL) - Retention of Communications Data.
Mrs Martins said that her office were grateful for the opportunity to comment the proposed amendment, which seeks to introduce an obligation to retain vasts amount of personal data relating to the communications of any citizen for investigation purposes. Mrs Martins commented that the proposed introduction of a voluntary code of practice would have severe limitations and thus any need for such retention should be on the basis of a statutory duty, therefore providing a greater degree of certainty than is possible with a voluntary arrangement.
